What are limits? Limits are the elements that constrain the claim/idea in an important way. They generally tell us how far the claim actually extends, or – if you prefer – the functional parameters of the claim. This is another way we can tell the difference between rules and exceptions. If we think about the exception for legally driving above the speed limit, the exception is limited by the kinds of contextual features that must be true, to in order to give us the exception to the rule and make speeding legal. That’s why the off-duty police officer going home is not allowed to drive over the speed limit – because the contextual features that otherwise allow him to break the general rule (officer on duty, traveling to location of a call) are no longer present.

Some things are true all the time, while other things are only true in specific circumstances. Limits tell us about how far the truth of a claim actually goes. For example, 2+2 = 4 is true all the time. On the other hand, a2 +b2 = c2 is true only if we are dealing with triangles which have a right angle. Those conditions (triangle, right triangle) are the limits of how far the Pythagorean Theorem actually goes. If you have a problem that can’t be turned into a right triangle, then the Pythagorean theorem is not functional for us in that context.
